During a time spanning from the 4th to 8th centuries, when Tra Kieu (then known as Simhapura) served as the political capital of Champa, My Son was the site of the most important Cham intellectuals and a religious centre. It is also believed that this site could have been used as a place of burial for Cham monarchs.

Temple towers in My Son Holy land are divided into several clusters, built according to the same principle. The structure of each cluster consists of a main shrine (Kalan), surrounded by small stupas or side structures. The main temples symbolize for Meru Mountain - the center of the universe, the convergence of the gods and the worship of Siva.
After being built for the first time in the fourth century, in a fire, wooden buildings were destroyed. In the early seventh century, King Sambhuvarman used bricks to rebuild the temple that still exists today. The kings then continued to repair the old temples and build new temples to worship the gods.
The temple was built with the main materials are brick, the technique of building towers of the Cham so far is still a mystery. People still do not find the appropriate answer for the material, the method of firing bricks and construction.
